In our cold little country there is a moderate maritime climate in which, even in the summer months, a lot of rain can fall. A rain gauge, also called pluviometer, is therefore indispensable to get an accurate picture of the local rainfall. Rain gauges consist of a funnel-shaped collector and a reservoir that is covered to prevent evaporation. When there is precipitation in the form of, for example, hail or snow, the water is first melted before the measurement takes place.
