Barometers
Handy air pressure gauges
A barometer is a measuring instrument to measure the air pressure. This instrument is therefore also called an air pressure gauge. The air pressure is the force that the weight of the air in the atmosphere exerts on the surface. Most barometers are equipped with an air-empty box that, depending on the pressure change, is pressed more or less. That movement is transferred to the dial, so you can read the air pressure.

Make your own weather forecast
Rapid changes in air pressure (also called atmospheric pressure) are usually accompanied by a lot of wind or are the harbinger of storm. If the position of your barometer rises or falls quickly, it often means that it will change again. Research into the relationship between the position of the barometer and the weather shows that rising air pressure in 80% of the cases leads to weather improvement. Conversely, in 80% of the cases a drop in air pressure results in poorer weather. That way you can easily do a weather forecast with a barometer yourself.
Air pressure in hectopascals
The physical unit of pressure is the bar, which is equal to 100,000 pascals. In meteorology the atmospheric pressure was formerly expressed in millibars (mbar), but nowadays the official unit of hectopascals (hPa) is used, which has exactly the same value. On the barometers from our range, both hectopascals and bar are used.
